FEDERER LOSES FIRST ROUND MATCH IN SHANGHAI

The first match in the Red group was between the no. 2 seed and defending champion Roger Federer and Gilles Simon, who was a replacement to the top seed Rafael Nadal when he dropped out of the Masters due to injuries.

In the first round, Simon tried to rally with the defending champion Federer but came up short when the Suisse took the first set 6 games to 4.

Despite some unusual errors from Federer, he managed to take an early 2-1 lead against the French, but the game was evened out when Federer lost on his serve. Simon continued to play well as he leads Federer 3-2.
A superb rally against the two contenders, in which Federer won the point and brought the game to 3 all tie. In the following game Federer is down 4-3, 3 deuce and 2 superb rallies---he erased Simon’s lead to have a 4 game tie. But the game was overturned when Simon took the second set 6 games to 4.

In the deciding set, Federer was down 3-2 and was down 0-40 on his serve but he miraculously got out of that when he escaped triple break points. Simon had the same luck when he was down 0-40 on his serve. By escaping the triple break point, he gained a critical 4-3 lead.

But Simon was will win it in the end 6 games to 3. it was definitely an upsetting loss to Federer since he is the defending champion. But I will give credit to Simon’s abilities since he beat Nadal in the Madrid Masters which brought great disappointment to his home crowd.
